OPEN was commissioned by City & Country to develop landscape proposals for the former Dorchester prison. These supported a residential masterplan with the original existing buildings converted and supplemented with new build residential blocks and terraces.

HMP Dorchester is located on the northern edge of Dorchester’s town centre within the Dorchester Conservation Area. The site is set within predominantly residential areas to the south, east and west with the River Frome defining the boundary to the north. The site is generally enclosed by the existing prison walls, but the site sits up on a wooded ridge which allows views to the site from the north.

The public realm and landscape proposals for the former Dorchester prison look to integrate with the adjacent areas where the site meets the town context while providing a new landscape setting for the existing and proposed buildings within the walls. These proposals respond to the change in use while respecting the existing architecture and structures, including the walls and listed gatehouse. The series of routes and spaces must function for those living at, moving through or visiting the former Dorchester prison. This includes facilitating the required pedestrian and vehicular access, and the provision of a series of spaces that feel comfortable and can be enjoyed by those living at the former Dorchester prison.
